Golden British Columbia, Boo the Grizzly Bear

While visiting my brother and his family in Golden we were lucky enough to visit Boo the bear for his morning feeding this fall.  Boo is an eight year old Grizzly who lives on the ski hill in a special habitat.  During the ski season at Kicking Horse he hibernates as folks ride on by.  At this time in the fall he was stocking up on calories for the long hibernation.  There were two moments that I was “bluff” charged by Boo showing his dominance and you can notice the sequence in some of the photos.

Butterflies

Yesterday I took one last trip in my 1971 VW Van before selling it.  I decided to make it a photo outing to the Butterfly Pavilion in Broomfield Colorado.  They have a fantastic little indoor rainforest atrium full of butterflies from around the world.  They introduce new ones twice a day and are constantly receiving more cocoons in the mail.  It was a great experience that anyone would enjoy.  Here are a few varieties I was able to catch with my camera.

Wharariki Beach, New Zealand

In 2007 I visited New Zealand and spent 6 months there.  For three of those months I lived and worked in Takaka, part of the Golden Bay- a very special place near the northwest tip of the South Island.  I took countless trips to Wharariki Beach, a mystical and beautiful stretch of sand dunes, wildlife, monolithic stone formations, grassy hills and rough ocean.  Here are a few of the photos I captured while there.

Ellerslie International Flower Show 2007, Auckland New Zealand

In 2007 I traveled to New Zealand on a Working Holiday Visa. It was an amazing 6 months spent hopping all over the south island working and exploring the bio diversity of that amazing country.  This set was from an outing I undertook just after landing in Auckland.  An acclaimed international flower show was at the botanical gardens, so I hopped on a train and checked it out.

Desert Wildlife, Tuscon Arizona

While in Tucson this past week I had a great time checking out the desert and its beauty.  Here are some wildlife photos I took while visiting the Desert Museum- a place where you can see these and many other animals in their natural habitat in a way that is more special than a zoo or museum, basically in the wild!  This set features Wildcats (Ocelot, Mountain Lion) and Raptors (Great Horned Owl, Prairie Falcon, Red-Tailed Hawk and Chihuahuan Ravens) as well as a photo of the Cactus Wren.

Nepal: 2011 International World Elephant Polo Championships

It was quite bit out of my way to get to the World Elephant Polo Championships, but I had to make it happen.  Yes, it is a real sport and the elephants are quite well-trained.  Each elephant has 2 people-a driver and a player.  The elephants in competition were all owned by the Tiger Tops Jungle Resort, a high-end jungle getaway on a massive preserved area which features jungle tours on elephant back.  This event is held on an airstrip outside of the jungle.  I found out about it while trekking in the Himalayas and reading a very old Nepal travel magazine at a guest house.  Quite a bit of research led me to realize that it was possible for me to attend.  Here are a few highlight photos from the days events.
